The Influence of AI and GenAI in Legal Operations: The Role of Large Language Models (LLMs) in the Nigerian Legal Industry

The legal industry has been notably slow in adopting technological advancements compared to other sectors like finance and healthcare. Despite innovations that enhance administrative efficiency, core legal functions such as litigation strategy, legal reasoning, and client interaction remain largely untouched by technology. This reluctance stems from the profession’s deep-rooted traditions, strict ethical obligations, and the irreplaceable human elements of legal practice, such as negotiation and empathy.

However, with growing pressure to improve efficiency and reduce costs, there is increasing interest in responsibly integrating technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI). While AI's ability to assist in legal research, predict case outcomes, and support judicial decision-making is expanding, the idea of AI replacing legal professionals remains unlikely in the near future.

This article explores the intersection between the law and technology, and why it is crucial for legal professionals navigating the evolving landscape. While the legal sector values tradition, embracing AI responsibly can enhance efficiency, accessibility, and decision-making without compromising professional integrity.
